Many earthquake engineers believe that earthquakes are not the ones that are killing the people; it’s the buildings that are killing the people. The heavier a building is it’s more likely to kill people if it collapses (McGuire, 2002). Half of the world’s population lives in coastal regions that are extremely vulnerable to earthquake destruction (Erickson, 2001). In the beginning of the twentieth century there was a German meteorologist, Wegener, who believed as many other meteorologists thought of the earth. Wegener believed that the earth consisted of disassembled pieces of a jigsaw puzzle (Sieh, 1998). An earthquake is the break of a block of rock that has been distorted beyond endurance and is forced to break. When this block breaks, vibrations are released. The vibration that is released is the earthquake we feel (Leet, 1957). To better understand this let’s have a closer look at earthquakes.
